Stressed? Try self hypnosis. Here's how!

First of all, "What is self hypnosis"? you may ask. Well, self hypnosis is a form of relaxation that is self induced. It's really quite simple. However, sometimes the word, "hypnosis" can confuse or scare people. I've had clients come in to see me and wonder if they have ever been hypnotized or if it were possible for them to be.

I'm here to tell you that yes, it is possible especially if you want to be hypnotized and believe that it will help you because it will if you allow it to. Just like any healing modality...yoga, ecstatic dance, meditation, ect. These practices allow us to get in touch with our inner selves for personal growth.

To demystify the process, I'll explain it a little more. It's really quite a natural occurance. For example, have you ever been driving down the freeway and realized that you had missed your exit because you were, "zoning out"? This is entering a mild state of hypnosis because you were engaging in a task where your concentration is focused on the road yet driving on the freeway does not require the same amount of alertness as driving in the city does, so consequently, your brainwaves slow down.

The movement of your car and the steady lines ahead act as the catalyst that lets you go into a state of hypnosis even if you didn't particularly want to at that time because you were trying to get somewhere in your car.

Reading a book or watching a film can also take you into a state of hypnosis, but be careful what kind of state of mind or emotion that you want to enter into. I get drawn into watching tv crime shows (Criminal Minds, Dexter, CSI, The Mentalist) because I like the "fear rush" that I get from the suspense, but too much of this can lead to paranoia or sleeplessness. So, it's important to be able to detach. If I get "freaked out" by say watching one of these programs, I will counteract this fear by doing some self hypnosis. Here is a demonstration.

First, I begin by taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly.
Next, I center my mind with a reassuring thought...
"this is only a dramatized fictional tv show"
Then, I begin to count down from 10 to I either in my mind or out loud.
With each number, I say something soothing to myself...words that I know will cause me to relax...

"10....I feel myself surrounded by a glowing light of warmth and goodness"
9....this light protects me and loves me unconditionally"
8...I am able to relax in this bed of softness that comforts me and keeps me safe
7...I release all fear from my body, mind and spirit
6...I release all my worries and cares to the universe(god) for it will solve any problems or issues that I have
5...I feel it all drift away far off into the distance
4...I am falling asleep easily and effortlessly
3...everything is peaceful and tranquil
2...my body, from the top of my head all the way down to the tips of my toes is drifting into a state of bliss.
1...sleep finds me, all is well.

You may also want to try an audio recording to assist you in getting to sleep soundly. I make personalized ones for my clients..complete with metaphors that you can easily relate to after talking with you for awhile and learning about your needs. Be well. Namaste!

Move toward instead of away from

Scott Sandland, a hypnotherapist who created hypnothoughts, the social networking site for hypnotherapists, discusses the importance of making decisons based on what you want and what you are looking for instead of the fear based mentality of holding onto something(job, relationship, belief system) due to lack of perceived options.

Want to Create an Amazing Future?

I found an interesting hypnotherapy book at the Body Mind Spirit expo here in Portland, OR. It's called, Discover the Language of the Mind by Patrick K. Porter, Ph.D. Within the text, he discusses a topic called, Psycho-Linguistics, which is the study of the language that the brain responds to in order to create effective and lasting change. A "series of patterns designed around strategies rather than problems."(Porter,P.1)

Now, some of this material is review for me as I learned a few of these techniques in my hypnotherapy course. However, as a continual learner and grower, I am seeking out various literature to absorb and glean from so that I can improve my skills as a hypnotherapist. I also want to hypnotize myself through the use of audio recording of scripts in addition to being induced into trance by other hypnotherapists.

To self hypnotize, I read and record these scripts along with music so that I can download the Mp3 into my Ipod and listen to before bed or upon awakening. The benefit of listening to them right before sleep is that the brain processes the suggestions during sleep. Upon awakening, it clears any negative dreams that I may have had or gets me into a state of meditation to prepare for the day. As my practice develops, I will be able to create these scrips for my clients as well.

I found a really amazing and practical script for reaching goals by a technique called, "Creating a Compelling Future."

Now, you may be wondering..Why would you want to "Create a Compelling Future"?

*A person wants her or his future to be better than her or his past.
*A person wants to dissolve or reprogram the unconscious self sabotage that is preventing her or him from reaching important goals.

*By creating a future that is compelling to you, you will have more motivation to strive to live this wonderful future that you have the power and control to produce.

As Dr. Porter states, "The purpose of this technique is to program the future with the desired changes in place, using a NLP process known as "future pacing", which means to mentally rehearse oneself living the desired future with the goal of creating behaviors and responses that feel natural and automatic."(Porter, P.133)

This allows the client to change current self sabotaging behavior easily because the mind has been rewired with the desired healthy and/or effective behavior that brings a person more contentment in life. This has been referred to as,"living as if." Have you ever just decided to improve your attitude about something and suddenly you see it from a new perspective? Well, this process works in this way ten fold.

Here is a sample self hypnosis script for you to try and enjoy.

The Steps to Creating a Compelling Future:

*Please only read when you are ready to be hypnotized and not at work or studying.

My eyes are comfortably closed...I take in three deep cleansing breaths...with each exhalation, I feel myself go deeper and deeper into a state of relaxation. So, with just this thought of relaxation and the intention of relaxation, I will be ten times more relaxed than I am now.

From here I will notice that with each word that is read, each breath that I take, I will relax and go deeper. It may be hard now for me to keep my eyes open, but I myself to blink slowly so that I can continue to read these words.

Now that I know how to relax, I imagine one of my goals....
with this goal in mind, I imagine that it is accomplished...I have done it...I imagine what I see, hear, feel, smell and experience when stepping into the future goal. What is my breathing like when I have accomplished that goal? I become now, my future self. I take all the time you need to fully visualize how I want to be, what I am becoming.

From here, I imagine moving backwards through time, from the future, back to this moment in time...I notice in reverse each of the steps that help me accomplish that goal...and when I am aware of the first thing that I will do upon awakening, that will CONVINCE ME, I know that I will begin these steps rapidly.

With these steps in mind, is there any reason that I shouldn't achieve or accomplish that goal? If so, would that part that is reponsible for the reason be willing to consider accomplishing that goal if its positive intent was met in a positive and healthy way?

Excellent! At this level of the mind, there is one hundred percent agreement in making the changes necessary so that I can accomplish my goals..I take in three deep, cleansing breaths...

Now, I return slowly back into the room..only as slowly NOW as I can accept, use and benefit from the power of my own mind. I am feeling the support below me...seeing the light around me...and hearing the sounds in the room.

I know that negative thoughts, concepts and beliefts will have no control over me at any level of the mind...at this or any level of awakening consciousness..when the changes are locked into place, and I know I can and will accomplish my goals, I will be wide awake..feeling fine and in perfect health...and this is so!

Re: Freedom from Addictions

Did you know that hypnosis is a proven way to free anyone from an addiction?

Scientific studies reveal that the use of hypnosis has been shown to be three times as effective as other methods used to stop smoking, with a sucess rate of about 30 percent. With the use of a combination of one on one therapy and prerecorded audio scripts, a much higher rate, up to 95 percent has been been claimed. (Streeter, 2004).

Hypnotherapist, Wendi Friesen, has been creating life altering audio recordings of scripts that she has written to assist many people finally quit smoking or be healed from countless other addictions. Did you know that even nail biting is an addiction for some people? I've struggled with this one myself.

Wendi explains it all in this short video. It's set in the beautiful state of Hawaii, a place where she visits often and swims often with dolphins and colorful tropical fish.

You will learn by watching this video that you too can be free from any addiction that has plagued or bothered you. Why live in turmoil or bondage to whatever controls you? Take charge now! You deserve it!

Re: Spiritual Cinema Circle films

Free Trial for a Short Time!
Have you ever heard of Spiritual Cinema Circle? Well, it's a film company with a spiritual twist! They offer films with messages about human nature and metaphysical themes that are creative and down to earth...inspiring and contemplative!

You can't get these short films in any video store though. They are only offered through mail order. It works much like Netflix except you get to keep them each month the disc is mailed out. Each DVD contains three to four short films. Usually, a longer one(about an hour) and two to three shorts(under 15 minutes).

These films will challenge your beliefs, make you ponder or try to decipher the messages behind them and always leave you feeling hopeful.

So, if you want a break or change from your typical violent action movie or depressing saga, I'd recommend giving Spiritual Cinema a try and don't worry about returning the DVD. Check out their latest shorts for September on this video here!
